What’s Indie music to you?

So you’re looking for a DJ to play indie music at your party or wedding. I can do that for you. Firstly, we need to be clear about what Indie music is to you and your guests. From my experience as a DJ and doing Indie parties, people have different interpretations of what Indie music is. I have compiled this playlist to show you my interpretation. Ideally it is in line with yours. If not, then we have some homework to do.

According to Wikipedia, Indie is short for independence, i.e. subculture music that is independent of major producers. There is indie, indie rock, indie dance, indie pop, indie folk, indie electronic and indie hip hop. I’m sure we could make up a few more aswell.

During the 80’s and 90’s, acts wanted to free themselves from the major producers/companies who had all the power in the market. They wanted to do it themselves and be independent. During this period many of the bands that I was introduced to were from older friends. The radios weren’t playing  the likes of the stone roses when they first came on the indie scene. You learned from your peers. This brings to mind the urban dictionary’s definition of ‘indie’, ‘An obscure form of rock which you only learn about from someone slightly more hip than yourself ‘. This resonates with me!

Nowadays Indie music is really pop music. The difference being that the indie artists/bands don’t use major companies to manage and market them. Instead they use smaller ones who harness the power of the internet. They still call themselves Indie even though they are in the pop music charts. So back to our Indie party……does our Indie music party include pop/commercial music from today that everyone will know or do we stick to the Indie from the 90’s and 00’s.

My point is do we allow ourselves to get caught up in the labels that the music industry has created in order to differentiate acts or do we just go with what feels good. The majority of birthdays, Weddings and Corporate events have a diverse range of musical tastes. It often happens that there is a group who love their ‘Indie’. I say cater for this group if they have requested as they will keep the party going. The others who don’t really care about music will be sucked into the fun anyway.
