A Sexy May Wedding
Did you know that the Hawthorn tree’s most common folk name is ‘the May tree’. Beltane or Bealtaine (Month of May) is the beginning of Summer and a time of high fertility starts at the first sprouting of the mayblossom. Mayblossom has a heady smell often associated with sexual activity. Hawthorn’s white blossom is associated with the male principle and its red berries of autumn are linked with the female, menstrual principle.
The Pleasures of Love
Going ‘a maying’- a term that referred to collecting hawthorn in the woods for May Day celebrations- became synonymous with the pleasures of love. The young men would cut a tree to erect as a maypole, which was then topped by a garland mayblossom. As the girls danced, the red and white ribbons symbolising the male and female principles, pulled down the mayblossom garland over the phallic maypole.
Wedding Bouquets And Circlets
Brides carried mayblossom in their wedding bouquets to encourage fertility- a custom that persists today, even though the original meaning may be forgotten. The white colour, spring petals and red autumn berries of hawthorn are associated, respectively, with the principles of masculinity and femininity. This tradition of entwining flowers and berries in bridal bouquets originates from the custom of using mayblossom to encourage fertility. With all this in mind ladies, it’s probably a good idea to remember the mayblossom on your May wedding day if planning on starting a family!
